In a contributed article for MilSatMagazine’s April issue, Inmarsat Government’s Senior Vice President of Government Strategy and Policy, Rebecca Cowen-Hirsch, highlights the cultural shift taking place within the government as it embraces commercial satellite communications (COMSATCOM) as part of a unified SATCOM architecture.

Cowen-Hirsch discusses some of the developments signifying this shift in perspective, including the components of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2018, the ongoing Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) and the formal establishment of the Commercial Integration Cell within the Joint Space Operations Center (JSpOC).

“After years of utilising COMSATCOM as a gap filler to augment military capability, the government now recognises the strategic importance of commercial SATCOM sources that are vital to our nation’s military and national security and are the foundation for superior diversity and redundancy, adding further resilience to its operations,” she wrote.
